Book of Fortune: the goddess of luck takes the book format

A Roman take on a well-worn idea

Amatic built Book of Fortune around Fortuna, the Roman goddess of luck. She is the top-paying symbol, joined by a laurel-crowned emperor, a golden wheel, a chalice and the familiar card ranks. The palette leans on gold and marble rather than sand, which is enough to set it apart from the studio's other book games.

The grid is the classic five reels by three rows. The book is the key icon: it stands in for other symbols and, as a scatter, opens the bonus when three or more land anywhere.

Free games with one expanding symbol

At the start of the feature a symbol is drawn at random. Throughout the free spins it expands to cover its reel whenever it appears on enough reels to form a win, and it pays on every line regardless of position. The choice shapes the round: a card rank expands often for small amounts, Fortuna appears seldom but transforms the screen when she lines up. Further books during the round can add more free games.

After any win you can use the card gamble, picking red or black to double the payout, or simply collect.

A sensible Book of Fortune free play session

The demo loads with 1,000 virtual credits, no download and no sign-up. Pick a fixed stake, around £0.20 equivalent, and give it 250 to 300 spins. Two things are worth writing down: how long the gaps between features are, and what each feature returns compared with your stake. Three or four bonus rounds will give you a rough sense of the spread between a weak and a strong expanding symbol.

It also helps to play the base game slowly for a while. Book slots pay little between features, so you learn quickly whether that rhythm suits you.

How it compares

Mechanically, Book of Fortune sits alongside Amatic's other book titles; the difference is the theme and the symbol set. If you prefer marble columns to tombs, start here. The same game runs for real money at the casinos below.
