Epic Ape: a giant gorilla takes over the jungle

King of the rainforest

Epic Ape is one of the Playtech games built around a single, oversized character. The gorilla dominates the screen, towering over the reels in a misty jungle full of vines and ruins. The other symbols, tropical creatures and jungle treasures, plus card ranks, are there to support him. If you like games with a clear hero and a bit of drama, the presentation does its job well.

The ape and his feature

The gorilla is the key to the game: he is tied to the wild and to the feature that gives Epic Ape its name. When he takes action on the reels, the spin changes, and those are the moments that produce the game's better results. Beyond that, the game offers free spins triggered by scatter symbols.

Because Epic Ape has been released in more than one version over the years, it is worth checking the paytable of this one before you play: it lists exactly what the ape does and how the bonus is triggered here.

How to approach the demo

The Epic Ape demo runs in your browser with 1,000 virtual credits, without a download or an account. A good way to learn it:

• Play 200 spins at a stake equivalent to £0.25.
• Count the times the ape's feature appears and what it added to each spin.
• Play on until you have seen the free spins at least twice, and compare how the two rounds ended.

Games built around a single big character tend to have quiet stretches between their best moments. The demo lets you judge whether the waits feel reasonable to you.

Who should try it

Epic Ape suits players who like a theatrical theme and a feature that visibly transforms the reels. If you prefer simple line slots without much going on, Highway Kings or Great Blue might be closer to your taste. The same game is available for real money at the casinos below.
