King of Cards Deluxe: a royal court on five reels

The look of the game

Greentube’s King of Cards Deluxe sets its reels in a red and gold throne room. The higher symbols are the trappings of royalty, while the familiar ten-to-ace values fill the gaps. The King himself presides over the screen, and the whole thing has the slightly theatrical feel of a deck of cards come to life.

The Deluxe edition is a refresh of an older cabinet game. The rules stay deliberately simple: five reels, fixed lines, wins paid left to right, and a gamble option after every winning spin. There are no cascades or collection meters to keep track of.

How the game plays

Most of the action comes from line wins in the base game, with a scatter-triggered free games round providing the big moments. Rather than take our word for the finer details, open the paytable before you spin: it lists which symbol triggers the bonus, how many free games you receive and what the special symbols do. Thirty seconds spent there makes the demo far more useful.

What you will notice quickly is the pace. Spins are short, wins are announced with the classic counting-up sound, and the gamble screen appears often. It suits players who like a steady, uncomplicated session.

A sensible demo session

The King of Cards Deluxe demo starts you with 1,000 virtual credits, without sign-up or download. A good approach:

• play 250 spins at a stake equivalent to £0.10;
• note how many spins it takes to reach the free games;
• try the card-colour gamble on a handful of small wins, then stop using it and compare.

Those three notes will tell you more about the game than any review.
