Black Vigil free play: wilds, the Signal and the Manhunt

Three spotlights and the city changes

Most of a Black Vigil session happens in the dark. The base game is a straightforward 5-reel, 3-row line slot, with 10, 20 or 30 lines and wins paying left to right from the first reel. Then three spotlights land, the screen fills with searchlight beams and you are into the Manhunt. Learning to read the gap between those two states is the point of playing the demo first.

The poster shows the mood well: an armoured figure in a torn cape standing on a stone gargoyle, a blood-red sun dropping behind spires. In the game, the cast is a grapnel, a police radio, a gauntlet, Inspector Voss and the Dealer, with the Warden himself as the wild and the spotlight as the scatter. Nocturn Play keeps the palette to black, steel and red, which suits the noir theme without making the reels hard to read.

The Warden and his multipliers

The Warden appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 and substitutes for everything except the spotlight. Each Warden multiplies the lines he sits on by ×2, ×3 or ×5, and when two or more share a line their multipliers multiply together, with a cap of ×25 per line. That is where the bigger base-game hits come from, so it is worth watching which reel he lands on rather than just whether he lands.

The Signal

When a spin pays nothing, the beam can switch on. It locks the first cells of a line and spins the reels again to try to finish it. It is a small feature, but it softens long dry spells and you will notice it more than you expect.

How the Manhunt plays out

Three, four or five spotlights anywhere give 4, 6 or 8 free spins per stage, and there are three stages: the Alleys, the Docks and the Tower. Wins are ×1 in the Alleys, ×2 at the Docks and ×3 in the Tower. Any Warden that lands stays locked until the end of the stage, then the board is cleared for the next one. From the Docks onwards the beam can also drop extra Wardens. Three spotlights during a stage add one spin, up to 10 per stage. The maximum win is 5,000× the bet.

Getting the most from the free demo

• Start on 30 lines. The bet is set per line, so £0.02 a line means a £0.60 total stake; it is the easiest way to see Wardens connect.
• Play around 200 spins and count the Signal respins and two-spotlight near misses. That gives you a feel for the rhythm.
• Buy the Manhunt with virtual credits at 100× the bet, three or four times. Compare a round where Wardens lock early in the Alleys with one where nothing happens until the Tower.
• Try 10 lines afterwards: the cost drops, but so does the reach of each locked Warden.

Autoplay can stop by itself when the bonus triggers, and turbo speeds up the base game if you are counting.
