Wolf Moon: a night on the prairie with Amatic

Setting the scene

Night falls over a canyon, the moon hangs huge in the sky, and the reels fill with wolves, eagles, bears, buffalo and other animals of the wild. Wolf Moon has been one of Amatic's most recognisable titles for years, largely because the theme is simple and the presentation is atmospheric without being overloaded.

The card ranks make up the lower-paying symbols, while the animals sit above them. The wolf is the one you want to see in numbers.

What the game offers

Wolf Moon is a video slot rather than a fruit machine, so there's a free games feature on top of the regular line wins. The info screen explains which symbol triggers it, how many free spins you receive and what changes during the round; it's worth reading once, because that's where the game's character comes from. Outside the feature, wins come from lines across the reels, and the card gamble is offered afterwards, as on most Amatic slots.

Expect the base game to be steady rather than spectacular. The free games are where the bigger moments tend to live.

Wolf Moon free play: how to test it

The demo gives you 1,000 virtual credits and needs no account. Choose a fixed stake, around £0.20 or £0.40 equivalent, and play at least 300 spins. Note each time the feature lands and how much it returned. Also note the longest stretch without it: if that gap feels too long in demo mode, it will feel longer with real money.

Try one session with autoplay and one spinning by hand. Some players find the slower manual pace makes the atmosphere work better.

Who it's for

Fans of nature themes, howling soundtracks and straightforward video slots with a single central feature. It's a classic for good reason. The same game runs for real money at the casinos below.
