Lucky 88: double eights and a choice to make

Why eight, twice

The number eight sounds like the word for prosperity in Chinese, so 88 means double luck. Lucky 88 leans into the idea with red and gold everywhere, traditional good-luck emblems on the reels and the Lucky 88 symbol itself, plus card ranks for the lighter wins. It belongs to the same group of Aristocrat games as Choy Sun Doa and 5 Dragons, and the family resemblance is obvious once the bonus starts.

The reels are a classic five by three. The base game is steady rather than spectacular; it's there to get you to the free games.

Choosing your free games

When the scatters land, you're asked to pick from several free games options. The pattern is the familiar Aristocrat trade-off: a long round with small multipliers on offer, or a short round where the multipliers are much higher. The multipliers come into play when the wild helps form a win, which means the short options depend heavily on the wild turning up.

There is no right answer, and that is what makes the game worth trying in free play first.

A Lucky 88 demo plan

The demo opens with 1,000 virtual credits, no sign-up and no download. To learn something real about the choice:

• Play at a stake equivalent to £0.25 until you trigger the bonus.
• Take the longest option the first time, the shortest the second, and write down the result each time.
• Repeat the comparison at least twice. A single short round can mislead you either way.

Lucky 88 against its cousins

If you know Choy Sun Doa, Lucky 88 will feel immediately familiar, with a slightly different look and symbol set. Some players simply prefer one theme over the other. Others switch between them for variety. The same game runs for real money at the casinos below.
